Temples in Korea

Many of my favourite photos from Korea were taken in and about temples like the photo of Uisangdae. Below are also some of my favourites.

한국에서 찍은 사진들 중 마음에 드는 사진들을 뽑다보면 절 사진들이 많다. 낙산사 가는 길에 찍은 의상대 사진도 그 중 하나이고, 아래 사진들도 마음에 드는 사진들이다.

첫 두 사진은 충남 예산에 있는 수덕사에서 찍은 사진들인 듯하다.¹ 나머지 두 사진은 어디서 찍었는지 더 확실하지 않다. 같은 수덕사 일수도, 마곡사 일수도.

First two photos are from Sudeoksa. I’m not sure where I took the last two photos. It could have been Sudeoksa. Or perhaps, Magoksa.

수덕사 석탑 둘 Two pagodas at Sudeoksa

첫 사진에는 수덕사 삼층석탑을 가운데 두고 아저씨 한분과 강아지가 비교된다.² 가운데 있는 삼층석탑은 고려시대 석탑의 전형을 보여주어 충청남도 유형문화재로 지정되있다고 한다.

The first photo shows a man and a dog with a stone pagoda in the middle. The pagoda has been designated as a cultural property as it shows a typical shape of a 3-story pagoda from the Goryeo dynasty era.

The pagoda in the second photo is relatively new. In fact, there is approximately 1,000 years of gap between the two. The first is known to be built as early as 665 but more likely after 918 when Goryeo took over the peninsula. The second was built in 2000. I wonder if the second pagoda will hold as much heritage value in 1,000 years.

두번째 사진에 나오는 금강석탑은 첫 사진에 삼층석탑에 비해 1,000년 정도 젊다. 삼층석탑은 빠르게는 665년에 지어졌다고 알려져 있는데 고려가 개국한 918년 이후에 지어졌을 가능성이 더 높다고 한다. 금강석탑은 2000년에 완공되었다. 앞으로 1,000년 후에는 금강석탑도 문화재로서 비슷한 가치를 가질지 궁금해진다.

어울림 Harmony

사진을 보면서 불자도 아니면서 절 사진들을 좋아하는 이유를 생각해 보았다. 건축물 각각의 형태가 아름답게 느껴지기도 하고 산사에서 느낄 수 있는 고즈넉한 분위기도 사진에서 느껴지기도 해서일 것이다. 무엇보다 그 아름다움과 고즈넉함을 돋보이게 하는 것은 건축물들이 산속에 주변 자연과 어울려져 있기 때문이라 생각한다.

I thought about what I like about the photos from Korean temples. No, I’m not a Buddhist. The shapes of individual buildings are beautiful. The photos remind me of the serene atmosphere of the temples. But most over all, the temples reside in harmony with the surrounding nature in mountains.
