I began the year 2022 on a hopeful note. School had started opening its campus to in-person activities. I was looking forward to using the department’s new office space. These hopes became fruitful. I am also personally optimistic about the upcoming year. However, the world saw a series of appalling headlines throughout the year. Russia started its Ukraine invasion in February. They are still at war which killed over 42,000 people as of writing. Below are three other news stories from the year I remember most vividly and would like to document.

2022년을 맞이할 때만 해도 희망적인 한 해가 될 것이라 기대했었다. 집에서 벗어나 학교에 다시 나갈 수 있게 되었고 새로 옮긴 과 사무실 공간은 더 기대를 부풀렸다. 실제로 돌아간 학교 새 사무실은 만족스러웠고 개인적으로는 대체로 희망적인 한 해를 보냈다고 할 수 있겠다. 하지만 세계 곳곳에서 불행한 소식들이 들려온 한해이기도 했다. 2월, 러시아는 우크라이나를 침공했다. 전쟁은 지금까지 진행 중이고 42,000명이 넘는 사람들을 희생했다. 아래는 그 외 내 기억에 가장 남은 소식 3가지이다. 기록하고 기억해야 할 소식들이라 생각되어 적어본다.

A misogynistic campaign wins the presidential election.

평소 한국 보수진영에 대해 반감을 품고 있음을 밝힌다. 윤ㅅㅇ이 대통령 보수진영 대통령 후보로 나올 수 있었고 나아가 대통령으로 뽑힌 사실에 대해서 당시에도 그렇고 지금도 생각할 때마다 경악을 느낀다. 본 글에 쓴 개인적인 의견들은 내 편향적인 사고에서 나왔음을 밝힌다.

Disclaimer: I have a disapproving opinion about the Korean conservatives. I was and am horrified that Yoon was elected as their candidate and as the president. I guarantee that the opinions I express here contain a strong bias against Yoon and the conservatives.

지난 3월 9일 대한민국 제20대 대통령선거가 있었다. 이번 선거에서 한국 시민들은 보수진영에서 내세운 전임 검찰총장 윤ㅅㅇ을 대통령으로 뽑았다. 당선자와 2위 후보(이재명) 사이에 역대 가장 적은 득표율 차이(0.8%)로 마무리된 대통령 선거였다.

South Korea held its 20th presidential election on March 9, 2022. The people of Korea voted for Yoon, the conservative candidate and former Attorney General. The election ended with the smallest percentage (0.8%) difference in votes between the president-elect and the runner-up (Lee, Jae-myung, the liberal candidate) in Korea’s presidential elections.

Yoon wrote a message dividing young female voters from male voters on his Facebok on January 7, 2022 in the middle of the 20th presidential election campaign. The post provided no further details.

선거 기간에 성 불평등과 그에 관한 남녀갈등이 아마 가장 뜨거웠던 쟁점 중 하나였을 것이다. 이 기간 가장 기억에 남은 선거운동 문구는 윤ㅇㅅ 페이스북에 올라온 “여성가족부 폐지” 일곱 글자이다. 그 일곱 글자 외에는 다른 설명이나 부서 폐지에 관련된 계획 같은 내용은 없었다. 이 짧은 문구는 별다른 설명 없이 젊은 유권자들을 명확하게 갈라놓았다. 당시 젊은 층을 상대로 선거를 이끌던 당대표 이ㅈㅅ은 반페미니즘을 명확하게 앞세우고 여성혐오를 부추겼다. 흔히 말하는 “갈라치기"로 선거를 승리로 이끈 것이다.

Among many issues, the hottest topic was perhaps gender inequality in Korea. During the election campaign, a moment that stuck was when Yoon posted a 7-syllable message on Facebook in Korean - “Abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.” The post provided no further plans or justifications. However, it sent a clear message to young male voters. The exit polls showed a clear divide between the female and male voters among those in their 20s and 30s. The party’s young leader then, Lee, Jun-Seok (LJS), led the misogynistic and anti-feminism campaign. Yoon and LJS chose to “divide and rule” the young voters to win the election.

A figure titled 2022 presidential election brought young female and male voters to an unprescdented gender war in South Korea displaying percentage differences in votes for the two major parties from 2012 and 2022 presidential elections by age groups. While the 2012 election showed a coherent results between female and male voters - young voters voted for the liberal candidate and older voters in their 50s and above voted for the conservative, voters in their 20s and 30s in 2022 voted in the opposite direction. More females voted for the liberal candidate while more males voted for the conservative candidate. Data came from South Korea National Assembly Research Service's report from March 28, 2022 and the estimates are based on exit polls conducted by three major Korean broadcasters.

삐져버린 대통령

On November 9, Yoon’s office banned one of Korea’s largest broadcasters, MBC, from the president’s plane. Crews from MBC had to take a commercial flight to cover his visit to Southeast Asia between November 11 and 16.

대통령실은 11월 9일 MBC 기자단에게 전용기에 탑승할 수 없다고 전했다. 11일부터 16일까지 예정되어있던 동남아 순방에 MBC 기자단은 일반 여객기를 통해 취재 길에 나서야 했다.

Why? Because MBC covered the president’s hot-mic moment after a chat with Joe Biden in the United States. Earlier in September, Yoon was caught saying, “What a cringe for Biden if those idiots at the congress don’t pass the bill.” MBC had also been covering other unfavourable stories for Yoon such as his wife’s plagiarism and fake academic/career records. These coverages surely annoyed Yoon.

왜 그랬냐고? 지난 9월 미국에서 바이든 대통령과 만난 뒤 윤ㅅㅇ은 카메라 앞에서 “국회에서 이 새끼들이 승인 안 해주면 바이든은 쪽팔려서 어떡하나"라고 말하였다. 이 장면을 MBC에서 다룬 것을 문제 삼아 전용기 탑승을 거부하였다. MBC는 그 전부터 윤에게 불리한 내용들을 여럿 다뤄왔는데 그중에는 윤의 아내의 논물 표절1이나 학력 및 경력 위조에 대한 내용도 있었다. 이래저래 대통령이 삐져버린 듯.

The Journalist Association of Korea condemned the ban and responded in a statement that “this case is a direct challenge to the basic democratic order of guaranteeing freedom of the press that transcends political parties.”

한국기자협회는 이에 대해 “이번 사안은 진영을 뛰어넘어 언론자유 보장이라는 민주적 기본질서에 대한 정면 도전이다"라고 긴급 공동성명에서 밝혔다.

Neglect kills a crowd on street

10월 29일 토요일, 한국에 많은 젊은 사람들은 핼러윈 주말을 즐길 준비가 되어 있었다. 하지만 그들이 모인 곳에 안전을 책임져야 했던 이들을 그러지 못했다.

On Saturday, October 29, many young people in Korea were ready to celebrate the Halloween weekend - the authorities in charge of their safety, not so much.

이태원 지구 반대편에서 아내랑 아침을 먹던 중이었다. 10여 명이 이태원에서 사망하였다는 뉴스 속보를 봤다. 믿기지 않았다. 서울 한복판 사람이 많이 몰리는 곳 중 하나인 이태원에서 한 번에 이렇게나 많은 사람이 죽을 만한 이유가 전혀 떠오르지 않았다. 사람이 몰린 이태원이라지만 사람이 한 번에 여럿 죽는 사건, 사고가 일어나는 경우는 기억나지 않았다. 하지만 사망자 숫자는 속절없이 늘어나기만 했다. 늘어나는 숫자를 보면서 받았던 충격은 쉽게 잊히지 않는다.

I was having breakfast with my wife on the other side of the globe when I saw the news that people were found dead at Itaewon, located in the centre of Seoul. At first, the number was somewhere in the 10s. I was shocked so many people died in one of the busiest areas in the city. I couldn’t think of a reasonable cause for so many deaths in the middle of Seoul. I had always considered Seoul a relatively safe city free from mass violence. The number only grew as I watched the news in disbelief.

29일 밤, 10만 명이 넘는 인파가 이태원을 찾았다. 좁고 경사진 한 골목에 인파 속에 갇혀 있던 사람들이 넘어지고, 무너지고, 사람들 사이에 깔렸다. 이날 압사 사고로 인해 158명이 사망하였고 이후 생존자 한 명이 스스로 생을 마감하였다.

During the night, more than 100,000 people visited Itaewon. In a narrow, slopy back alley, a crowd fell, collapsed, and was crushed. The tragedy left 158 people dead from the crush. One survivor took his life less than two months after.

더욱 충격적인 것은 충분히 막을 수 있는 참사였다는 것이다. 이태원에서 핼러윈을 즐기러 인파가 모인 것이 처음이 아니었다. 안전을 책임지는 이들도 수년간 이태원에서 핼러윈을 즐기러 모인 인파에 대해 충분히 인지하고 있었다. 그런 인파를 대비해서 책임자들은 마약 단속에 중점을 두었다. 안전을 위한 군중 관리는 그 뒷순위였다. 정복 경찰들이 아닌 사복 경찰들이 이태원에 우선 배치되었다. 하지만 참사 후 현장에서 마약 관련 흔적은 찾을 수 없었다. 참사에 책임이 있는 이들이 10월 29일 후에 보인 모습들은 희생자들과 남은 생존자들에 대한 존중이나 공감은 찾아보기 힘들었다.

What is more alarming and disturbing about the night is that the tradegy was preventable. The night wasn’t the first Halloween weekend such a crowd gathered in Itaewon. The authorities were well aware of the Halloween gatherings from the past years. In preparation of the night, they focused on catching illegal drug users instead of placing uniformed officers to control the crowd for public safety. Later the authorities searched for traces of illigal drug uses during the night but found none. After October 29, the victims and survivors saw little respect or empathy from those responsible for the tragedy.

10월 29일 참사 희생자분들의 가족과 친구분들, 현장에서 고통받으셨던 생존자분들께 위로의 말씀을 전합니다. 2022년 10월 29일, 그날을 기억하겠습니다.
